I always like watching all the old ‘Scrooge’ movies on TV at this time of year. I prefer the black and white ones. I picture London being black and white in 1843, when Charles Dickens penned the tale – and in fact, Benjamin Franklin described old London as being a smokey, dark place in the mid 1700s. One of the best film versions is the 1935 one starring Seymour Hicks. When he contritely visits his nephew and his nephew’s new wife at the end, he takes a moment to look at their Christmas tree. He sheds a tear because it’s so beautiful.
Most Americans know the plot well. The despondent Charlie Brown who just can’t work up his Christmas cheer amidst crass commercialism. The confident and obnoxious Lucy, who finds the allegedly perfect solution to Charlie Brown’s gloom. The ill-fated Christmas pageant, which confirms Charlie Brown’s status as a loser. And finally, the rebirth of Christmas cheer that comes through Linus’ recitation of the original Christmas story.
One cannot help but notice that Christmas is once again upon us; from the decorations outside people’s homes, to the frantic sales in the stores to boost year end sales. Yet, has Christmas become so commercialized that we have forgotten what we are celebrating? Putting aside the fact that Christ was probably born in April, not December, we are celebrating the birth of the most important human being who ever lived. I have always felt that Christmas was becoming too commercialized, but this year that sentiment is made more poignant by the fact that I have undergone a spiritual awakening, of sorts, over the past 12 months. Christmas, to me, is not about the decorating, the gift giving, or the big family meal; it is about remembering, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

At this time of year we think about celebrating Christmas, which to many folks is anything but spiritual. it’s a time to eat, get drunk, and insult the relatives you haven’t seen in a year. I realize lots of folks don’t like all this “religious” stuff so I expect my readership for this article and others like it will be down. That’s okay. I have to say what I say and I’m not out to win a popularity contest. Spiritual things are important, even if many don’t want to admit that.
