
For those of you that were expecting just a “deep recession”, I am afraid that you are going to be very disappointed. It took years for the U.S. economy to fully unravel in the 1930s, but now we have witnessed a similar level of economic devastation in just a matter of weeks. More than 26 million Americans have already lost their jobs, economic activity has come to a standstill, people are lining up for miles at food banks all over the nation, and businesses are being permanently shuttered at a staggering pace. The sentiment is repeated like a religious mantra and I believe it is rooted in a collectivist reaction in the minds of many. The idea is that if we all comfort each other by repeating the lie that we’re all in the same boat, and if everyone believes it, then the threat of the outbreak along with the economic collapse will somehow simply “disappear”. 

Years ago, I heard a story about something that happened in the former Soviet Union. It was in a small town. When the Soviets took over, they did their best to stamp out the Christian religion, as totalitarian regimes always do. But in this one town, there was an elderly priest who was much loved. Instead of arresting and persecuting him, they decided the best way was to just “starve him out.” They figured that, as he was so old, he couldn’t live much longer anyway. Of course,they made it known to the people that to attend the church services was frowned upon, and most stopped going out of fear. But some few secretly supported the old priest, sneaked and brought him food, or money…
We are seeing the most draconian measures enforced at all levels of government that we’ve ever seen in our lifetimes, and yet, rather than being alarmed by the things going on, so many of you applaud.
Do you know when and how you are going to die? While I not be among the majority, I believe only God knows when I am going to die, and I can’t live my life in constant fear of that day arriving. I am in complete agreement with something Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson once said, “God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me.”
Much is being said these days about how the two-week period of April 5-19 is expected to experience a peak in coronavirus (COVID-19) deaths. This prediction applies to the city of New York as well as certain other cities and areas of the United States.
