Ross: the Paper Prison

I’m going to try to keep this as short as humanly possible, but I am not going to make any promises; I do get carried away sometimes. Before I get to the subject matter I wish to discuss, there is something I think I need to clarify. I call these things essays, but that’s not entirely accurate, the are opinion pieces; my opinion. I do not claim to be right, but I do my very best to provide sufficient evidence to support my opinion.

I have found that people do not want to read things that cause them to call into question their own opinions; they would rather read only those things that validate them. That, if you ask me, ensures that one will never grow; for if they refuse to question their own opinions, their own beliefs, then how will they ever know if they are based upon solid evidence; upon the truth?

I have been writing for quite some time; long before I posted my first entry on my zombie-slayer blog. However, since that goes back far enough, I will use it as an example. If you were to go to my blog and read the very first entry I made, dated September 11, 2008, you would see that the opinions I expressed differ rather dramatically from the opinions I express now. There are two reasons for that and they are interconnected.
The first reason is that I’ve learned a lot since 2008; and I continue to learn more every day. That growth in knowledge has led to revise, revise, and revise again, my opinion. However, I would not have been able to do that, to grow, had I not been willing to read things that contradicted the opinions I held at the time.

I do not care if someone holds an opinion that differs from mine; so long as they are both willing and able to support that opinion with facts and evidence. Far too often I get into debates, arguments is more accurate a term, with people who have very strong opinions, but the cannot provide one shred of evidence to support it. Or, if they do, the best they can come up with is ‘I heard it on the news’ or ‘I learned that in school.’

I’m sorry, that is not evidence; it is hearsay, second hand information that, if you were in court would be deemed inadmissible. The only way to find out if what you are being told is to research the matter for yourself; get as close to the source as possible. If you want to know what the Constitution says, don’t just take what your high school textbook says about as being true, read the document for yourself; then think about it.

If you really want to dig deeper, read what those who supported the document (The Federalists) and those who opposed it (The Anti-Federalists) had to say. Once you’ve done that, compare the world we live in today and see which side of the argument held the test of time; I think you’ll find the Federalists failed miserably, and that the Anti-Federalists were right to be concerned.

But I’m not here to talk about the Constitution; that was just an example. If people base their opinions upon what they were taught in school, or what they hear on the news, then they will never know the truth. The public school system is not, I repeat, NOT a system of education; it is a system of state run indoctrination centers. They may teach math science, and reading and writing; although that last one is questionable; seeing as how there are many who graduate from high school at a 5th grade reading level. But when it comes to history, civics, and critical thinking, the school system teaches a ‘state approved’ curriculum; designed to elicit beliefs and values that the ‘state’ wishes the people to hold.

A perfect example of that is how the schools teach tolerance for deviant sexual behavior. When I was going through the indoctrination center the system not only did not teach the things our kids are being taught today, they would have been drug out of the classroom and lynched had they even tried. Yet slowly, over many years, people were softened up, made ready, to accept the agenda the school system, (ie, the state) wished to promote. Now, those who stand in opposition to this agenda are the bad guys; the evil people who lack tolerance. That’s how powerful the school system is.

Think about it, roughly 3.8 million kids graduate from high school in the U.S. every year. In ten years you will see that 38 million children will have had opinions shaped, values shifted, and beliefs established, by these ‘educators.’ Maybe now you can begin to see how the values and beliefs of an entire country could be shifted in one to two generations; and once they are shifted it becomes next to impossible to reverse the damage.

That’s the school system, let’s talk about the news media now. It should be pretty obvious that the news media is biased; with certain news agencies taking a left leaning stance on the issues, and others taking a right leaning stance. This is just another means to maintain the partisan schism in America; a schism that keeps people arguing with one another rather than seeking out the truth; and you aren’t getting the truth from the news. I hate to burst people’s bubbles, but the news media lies; all the time. If they aren’t lying, they are only telling part of the story; the part that will cause people react in a manner that is in accordance to the conditioning they received at the hands of the school system/s.

People (in general) may not have noticed this, but to those I consider my friends, and I, it is pretty obvious; whenever a story breaks that starts to get too much traction, or causes people to start asking questions that they system does not want to answer, the news media shifts gears. What I mean by that is, they break a new story; one designed to take people’s attention away from last weeks news.

What happens is that the people find themselves bombarded with a never ending stream of stories, many of which cause them to remain in a constant state of fear; so much so that people just want their fears to go away. So they turn to the people they’ve been conditioned, indoctrinated, to believe are the only ones capable of taking away their fear…government. Of course, government promises to ‘do something’ about it, but it always comes at a cost. That cost may come in the form of higher taxes, it may come as a loss of certain freedoms, or it may come at the cost of an expansion of government control over their lives. It does not matter what the cost is; the people always lose out.

I never said I have all the answers, but I am not one to believe everything I have been, or am being, told; I seek answers on my own. If the facts I uncover prove that an opinion I held was wrong, I revise it. If the evidence confirms an existing opinion, I continue on until facts come along that demand I revise my opinion. That’s called intellectual integrity; a quality that is sorely lacking amongst the general populace.

I said I would try to keep this short, and since I just crossed the 3 page mark I will try to wrap it up.

In the final year of the TV miniseries Westworld we saw that Charlotte Hale, a host (robot) had gained control over the human race. She, by way of tones broadcast from a tower in her command center, controlled the actions of every human being. However, there were those who began to break free of their conditioning. Some were killed, and others were rescued by those who lived beyond the control of the ‘system.’

That is very similar to the first Matrix film; how people lived in cocoons to serve the machine world; living in a fictional world known as the Matrix. Some escaped and dedicated their lives to fighting the system, and freeing the minds of those still trapped within it.

That’s all I’m doing. I am not telling you to trust me at my word, I’m asking that you don’t trust the system at its word; I’m asking you to ask yourself, ‘How do I know that what I’m being, or have been, told is the truth?’ I’m asking that you start thinking on your own; that you seek out the truth on your own.

That is the system’s biggest fear; not an armed uprising; an intellectual uprising where millions upon millions break free from their conditioning and start thinking for themselves. In essence, I’m trying to start a revolution; an intellectual revolution in which the people start to think on their own. I will never know how many people have broken free of the Matrix because of these opinion pieces; I can only spread seeds and pray for the best. But if you think about it, it does not really matter; for in the end God’s plan will prevail, and that’s what people, ultimately, ought to be concerning themselves with.

And, as promised, I kept this pretty short. I hope you found something useful, or inspiring, in it. Have a blessed day…
