I realize that some are awaiting my next installment on the history of banking in America, but sometimes I get these thoughts in my head that just demand that I write them down; if only to clear my mind so I can continue thinking about something else. This is one such occasion…

There is a great deal of debate among people over which party is best suited to run our system of government, and solve all the problems this country currently faces. While our country certainly does have some problems that need addressing, looking at it from the perspective of hoping that government can fix these problems is not going to solve anything.

Government is a man-made institution, and as such it is operated/controlled by men…and women. The problem is, mankind is flawed; we are often morally weak, we are susceptible to corruption, and we are sinful. So, it is natural that, when you produce a system that gives those who inhabit it power over the people, that the system will eventually be taken over, and run, by people who want to use the system to benefit themselves, and to subjugate and oppress others. That fact is only compounded by the fact that a system may have been instituted by those kind of people from the outset.

The problem is not which party controls the system; it is not even the fact that the system was designed to subjugate the people from the outset. The problem is that people have forgotten that we are God’s creation, and as such, God has provided us with certain rules that we should adhere to in our daily lives.

Samuel Adams once said, “Neither the wisest constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt. He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of his country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man.”

We can argue all day amongst one another over which party is better than the other one, but in the end, both parties seek to use the power that government gives them for purposes other than the securing of the fundamental rights and liberty of each and every individual the system governs. One party may (or may not) be less guilty of that, but they are not guiltless; and it is people’s continued support of the system (good or bad) that prevents us from seeing the true nature of our problems; and remedying them.

People constantly tell me that we need government to pass laws that protect them against criminals. While I am not saying that crime does not exist, I am saying that people are not asking themselves why this crime exists. Why do people steal from one another, or hurt each other? Government cannot legislate morality; it can only ensure that those who commit such crimes are punished, or sent away to places where they can no longer bring harm to the general public.

However, the root cause of all this crime is not government; it is not which party controls government; it is due to a degeneration in our morality and virtue as a people. It is inevitable that as our morals degenerate, crime will increase; both in the amount of crime we witness, and in how horrific it becomes in regards to the evil things we do to one another.

You cannot fix the evil that resides in people’s hearts by voting for Democrats or Republicans; nor can you fix it by amending, or abolishing your system of government. In fact, the opposite is true. If you want to abolish crime altogether, you must give government absolute power and dominion over your lives; surrendering every aspect of your freedom to their control. The problem with that is, as soon as you do that, you can no longer question anything the government does; not without being labeled an enemy of the state; a point we are almost at now anyway.

If we want to fix what is wrong in this country we must fix what is wrong in our hearts. For America to claw its way out of the depths we have sunk to, we must learn to respect the life, property, and liberty of others. We must also learn to accept responsibility for ourselves; our own wants and needs; to stop depending/expecting that others provide the things it is our individual responsibility to provide for ourselves.

The same year our Constitution was being written, John Adams wrote, “The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence. If ‘Thou shalt not covet’ and ‘Thou shalt not steal’ were not commandments of Heaven, they must be made inviolable precepts in every society before it can be civilized or made free.”

If you support government, you cannot support the Commandments handed down by God to Moses on Sinai; for government does not respect them; it covets and steals that which is not theirs, regardless of which political party happens to control the system.

One cannot say that this system of government is moral, that it is virtuous, when, for nearly 50 years it sanctioned the murder of unborn babies; under the guise of a ‘woman’s right to choose.’ How can anyone call themselves Christian, regardless of whether their party opposed abortion, when the system allowed that evil practice to continue for so long?

The same goes for slavery; how could you call this system moral when the drafters of the Constitution had the chance to end slavery in 1787; instead, choosing to implement a system rather than address a fundamental evil? I could go on and on with examples of the evil things this government has done, from the Tuskegee Experiments to MK Ultra, and it does not matter which party was in charge; it was the system that perpetrated those crimes. How can you support such a system, and call yourself a Christian?

I frequently hear people quote Romans 13 in response to that question; saying we are obligated to obey the political authorities. While that may be true, we are also obligated to discern between good and evil; choosing to serve good and denounce evil. In Malachi 3:18 we read, “Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.”

Does your government serve God, or does it serve itself, or the rich and powerful who seek dominion over us? If you do not speak out against the evil that those you elect do, you are just as complicit in the crimes they commit as those who actually commit them; you will not be held blameless when you could have spoken out against evil, or resisted it!

The Bible is rife with passages regarding how the Lord delights in those who speak the truth, while condemning those who speak falsely. Yet your government is run by pathological liars, while its lackeys in the media promote the lies; while hiding the truth from you. Yet you still support this system; saying it is the best the world has ever seen; that it is inspired by God. Well, prove it; show me how the things this system does would be condoned by God!

Ultimately, we are to blame for what is wrong in this country; not the Democrats, not the Republicans, and not the system itself. We allow the system to continue because we are too lazy, too dependent, or too cowardly to rise up and abolish it. Our ancestors would disown us for what we have allowed to happen. In fact, John Adams said basically that when he wrote, “Posterity! You will never know, how much it cost the present Generation, to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make a good Use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it.”

It was, and continues to be, our job to ensure that only wise, virtuous, God-fearing men serve in our system of government. Noah Webster told us that back in 1763 when he wrote, “When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers, let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers, ‘just men who will rule in the fear of God.’ The preservation of [our] government depends on the faithful discharge of this Duty; if the citizens neglect their Duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted; laws will be made, not for the public good so much as for selfish or local purposes; corrupt or incompetent men will be appointed to execute the Laws; the public revenues will be squandered on unworthy men; and the rights of the citizen will be violated or disregarded. If [our] government fails to secure public prosperity and happiness, it must be because the citizens neglect the Divine Commands, and elect bad men to make and administer the Laws.”

Unfortunately, we have not heeded those words. Therefore, we suffer; because we, regardless of the fact that we go to church, read our Bibles, and profess our faith in Jesus Christ, have forsaken the laws that God has commanded that we live our lives by. In short, we are suffering because God has forsaken us. As it states in 2 Chronicles, 7:14, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

The Democrats are not going to fix what is wrong in America, nor are the Republicans; they like things just the way they are. If we want to fix this country we need to look deep within our hearts and cast out the evil that resides there; we must seek God’s guidance and only then do we stand a chance.
