A recent article by Andrea Widburg on the American Thnker should have been quite illuminating for those with children still unfortunate enough to be in public schools. Though I disagreed a little with Widburg’s timeframe, her take on public schools and the National Education Association were right on target.
She started off with: “Going back to America’s founding, teaching was a job that was meant to create a literate population that embraced American values.” That statement would hold true for most church and other private schools to a large extent, though, as with all things, there were some exceptions. But when we get to the beginnings of public schools here, it was a different ballgame.
With people like Unitarian Horace Mann and socialist Robert Owen in the forefront of promoting public education back in the 1830s-40s the agenda became not so much promoting American values but rather changing American values. Admittedly, that had to happen slowly, with leftist educators taking a Fabian approach lest parents become alarmed, but it still was happening. And it was happening in the 1840s – not the 1960s as Ms. Widburg suggests. That’s my main disagreement with her–the timeframe for it all. Other than being 120 years off, her article was superb.
Most of her article was about the National Education Association, a teacher’s union we have been saddled with since the 1850s. Yes, folks, it’s that old. Most think of it as a 20th century innovation but it was around long before that. If you want to read about the NEA’s history, get Samuel Blumenfeld’s book The NEA: Trojan Horse In American Education. Sam’s book gives you an eyeful about this august group – and maybe “cult” is the correct term for them. There are a few used copies of Sam’s book still listed on Amazon.
Widburg noted: “Starting around the 1960s it (teaching) became a ‘profession’…now, though, it’s a cult, and everyone of us should be absolutely terrified of the maniacs who have complete control over our children for eight hours a day, five days a week, seven months a year. The National Education Association is the largest teacher’s union in the world and the largest trade union in the United States, representing 3 million American teachers. It’s also one of the Democrat parties most devoted donors. It recently held its national conference, at which approximately 6,000 educators met to debate the vital issues that impact American public education and set NEA policy and activities for the year ahead.” And “educational” issues are far from the only thing they deal with.
The current president of the NEA is a black lady, Becky Pringle, who has been called “a leftist among leftists.” Quite a distinction! Pringle was, in 2021, “Seeking to position her union at the forefront of the social justice movement… her success, she believes, is tied to having Mr. Biden as a partner.” That tells you right there where Pringle and the NEA are coming from. The teacher’s union has become little more than an appendage to the socialist Democrat Party!
Widburg observes: “You get the picture. For Pringled there is only one filter through which to view education, and that is race and, especially the fact that America is a fundamentally racist nation. Education is no longer about reading, writing, and arithmetic, with a little civics thrown in for good measure; it’s about instructing students to hate America, blacks to hate whites, and whites to hate themselves.” Widburg notes that, this year, “Pringles NEA keynote address is a staggering piece of leftism. She hits every leftist ‘social justice’ point: racism, homophobia, misogyny, xenophobia, social justice, transgender, reproductive rights, student loans, bad supreme court… inequity, gun violence, indigenous people,… taxes on the wealthy, destroying school vouchers, free meals, banned books, etc. She also attacked America’s very foundation; her hysterical delivery and her worship for the NEA are terrifying.” So how many of the myriad issues she touched on here have anything to do with educating kids?
In conclusion, Widburg labels the NEA as “a leftist cult–and my rule of thumb is that my child should never be in the same room as a cultist. If you haven’t already done so, think seriously about homeschooling your children.” Or find a good Christian school that shares your worldview – but get your kids out of a public school system controlled by far leftists. All public school teachers are not leftists, but unfortunately, the ones currently running the “educational” show are hard-core leftwingers and your kids stand no chance for a real education in a leftist environment. Good teachers will try to stall this trend, but they cannot reverse it, so you need to…
Get your kids out!
