It’s amazing what you can find out by doing a little research. Sometimes it isn’t all that hard. Some of this stuff is literally right in front of us if we just take a little trouble to see it. I’ve been writing lately about the issue of education, teachers unions, and such. Over this past weekend I did a little research on Albert Shanker, who had been the head of the American Federation of Teachers for many years. According to Wikipedia, Shanker’s family were originally Russian Jewish immigrants who ended up in New York. The family had strong political vires, were pro-union, and followed the socialism of Norman Thomas.
Shanker was a philosophy major at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joined the Congress of Racial Equality and helped to picket segregated movie houses and restaurants. Wouldn’t have thought you’d find too many of those in an “enlightened” state like Illinois, but then, who knows? And–Shanker was a member of the Young Peoples Socialist Alliance as well as a chairperson of the Socialist Study Club. After graduation, he did graduate studies at Columbia University–hardly a bastion of conservatism.
He taught at a public school in East Harlem for awhile but began his tenure as a union organizer in 1959 where he helped organize the Teacher’s Guild, a New York City affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers that had been founded by John Dewey in 1917. Many of you have heard of John Dewey. He was a socialist and Humanist that had a very real negative effect on real American education. But, how many of you knew he founded the teachers union? I didn’t. So, even the teachers unions had socialist origins–hardly surprising when you look at the foundations of the Public School Movement in this country. Shanker even served some jail time in both 1967 and 68 for leading illegal teachers strikes–one of which closed almost all of New York City’s public schools for 36 days!
Now stop and ponder just a minute – These are the people that are supposed to be educating your kids in public schools. As you can see, they have lots more on their agenda than the education of your kids–if real education even enters into the equation.
Then there is a multi-national teachers union called Education International. This mega-group is made up of teachers from the free world and teachers from communist countries. That would seem to be an odd mix–except when you realize that many of the teachers from the free world are socialists. Once you grasp that fact it begins to make sense. This group works with the United Nations UNESCO organization. The major figure in this mergine of teachers from both communist and free countries into Education International was, guess who – Albert Shanker, who ended up becoming the first president of EI.
So what we have is socialist teachers from free countries uniting with communist teachers from communist countries to form an international teacher’s union. How many of you seriously think American kids have any chance at real education with a setup like this? Don’t all raise your hands at once!
This is just one more compelling reason that Christian parents need to take their kids out of public schools. It should be apparent by now that this deck is stacked against the children of America and that public schools will never give them the education they need to be able to function as free Americans.
