A mother in London was found guilty of mutilating her 3-year-old daughter’s genitals. Okay, some crazy Brit Mum goes nuts and butchered her toddler’s genitals. End of story, right?
No, this is an anti-female practice that has victimized tens of millions of girls worldwide, including Europe and even the United States. It’s called by lots of names, but the nicest is “female circumcision.” Or “genital cutting.” I prefer the more accurate official Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), sometimes Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C).
Let’s analyze that description. Female means it affects only girls, most of them very young and helpless. Genital means we’re talking about the most intimate part of a girl’s body. Mutilation strikes to the very heart of the practice; it’s not a therapy massage, it’s often simply butchering the poor girl’s genitals.
During my six years working in the Middle East, I first learned of this outrage against females as young as 3 years old or younger and as old as 50. I worked almost exclusively with Muslims. Most of them harbored views on family and the world that would leave most Americans shaking their head. One of the men I worked with was a nutcase Islamist who essentially believed in the purity of all things Muslim, even some he and his fellow Islamists come up with, such as Honor Killings.
Unfortunately, this idiot had a daughter. He didn’t hesitate to admit he had specific ideas about raising his daughter—and one of them was that women have uncontrollable sex urges that men should control through what he called female circumcision. “Only then will her urges be controlled, and more men will want to marry her.”
I was naïve and didn’t understand how a female could be circumcised, but he proudly filled me in on how girls like his daughter would have their honor assured. Here’s how CNN described some of it: “Female genital mutilation, or female ritual cutting, involves altering or injuring female genital organs. It’s often done by people with no medical training and in filthy places, posing horrendous health risks that can linger for decades. Some women end up ravaged and require special medical procedures just to be able to menstruate or give birth. . . Cases run the spectrum, from pricking the clitoris to removing it completely to sewing up skin around the vagina.”
In crap hole countries, it is usually performed by traditional cutters who may use anything from razor blades to scissors, broken glass or tin can lids.
But it’s no big deal, I once thought, a quick cut and a few Tylenol, and it’s all over. No, I learned it’s a practice the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies as a serious human rights violation. The practice brings with it serious physical and emotional health consequences, including sexual dysfunction, incontinence, increased risk of HIV transmission, the risk of infection, and uncontrolled bleeding. The female can end up with severe bleeding, problems urinating, cysts, infections, infertility, complications in childbirth, increased risk of newborn deaths as well as emotional scars. Their lives are also at risk.
“Female genital mutilation has an appalling physical and emotional impact on victims that usually lasts their entire life,” said deputy chief crown prosecutor Lynette Woodrow in a statement. “A 3-year-old has no power to resist or fight back.” Neither does an older child, say 10 or 12, and up.
Well, it’s surely only those crap hole countries that practice this barbaric procedure. We in more civilized countries have no worries, right?
Not exactly. Europe, which sold its soul to migrants from crap hole countries long ago, has a problem with them,. They do it two ways: They get a cutter to perform it there or they ship the girl off to the home country and have a distant relative perform it over there. A report completed in 2014 by London’s City University and the NGO Equality Now found that an estimated 137,000 women and girls— from infancy to at least age 50 who were permanent residents in England and Wales in 2011— have experienced this brutality. Nowhere in England and Wales is free from FGM.
Britain has a lot of migrants from countries that believe in the barbaric practice. It’s illegal, but in those closed migrant communities, who knows what goes on? But here in America, nothing like that ever happens, right?
But it does. (In America, it works out, you can take the child to Michigan, among other states. Republican state legislator Mary Franson has spent two years pushing for a state law that would allow tougher prosecution of parents who facilitate or allow the genital mutilation of their daughters, without success. Among those fighting against her was state legislator and current U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar.) According to research by the Population Reference Bureau, “the number of women and girls in the U.S. who have undergone FGM or are at risk of facing this brutality has more than doubled since 2000 to more than half a million. That’s despite the fact that the U.S. government banned FGM in 1996, and passed legislation in 2012 that outlaws shipping women overseas to undergo FGM. Since 2014, 24 out of 50 states have also passed laws prohibiting FGM. Now, activists are calling for the remaining states to also take action.” Last year a judge in Detroit declared the law unconstitutional, thereby leaving such regulation up to states. As reported by the Detroit Free Press, the ruling led to the dismissal of FGM charges against two Michigan doctors and six others.
The historic case involves minor girls from Michigan, Illinois and Minnesota, including some who cried, screamed and bled during the procedure and one who was given Valium ground in liquid Tylenol to keep her calm, court records show.
The judge’s ruling also dismissed charges against three mothers, including two Minnesota women who prosecutors said tricked their 7 -year-old daughters into thinking they were coming to metro Detroit for a girls’ weekend, but instead had their genitals cut at a Livonia clinic as part of a religious procedure.
The leftists in America will probably insist that we respect a woman’s right to mutilate her child’s genitals and destroy her life. Nothing new there, even though they insist that mothers have no rights on their child’s abortion.
